Architectural Description

The center will feature a large leisure pool with a beach entry, a lazy river current channel, a vortex current area, a water slide accessed from a 26’ high platform, short course lap lanes, a challenge feature and an innovative raised play structure that includes interactive water sprays, slides and a large tipping bucket.  The pools feature the latest in pool filtration systems and elements that reduce water and chemical use, such as supplemental Ozone and UV systems.  These systems also minimize the risk of waterborne illnesses.   An adjacent 8 lane competitive lap pool includes a diving area with both 1 meter and 3 meter diving boards.  Spectator seating for swimming competitions overlooks the lap pool and a designated swim team entrance.

EDA Architects has planned the 107,000 square foot Center around a double height sky-lit atrium lobby space that features views into most of the planned activity spaces.  A suspended running track circles the fitness areas, an aerobic/dance studio and a spin (cycling) room and includes views into the double gymnasium, the aquatic areas, and the new streetscape.  Other facility amenities include party rooms, two multi-use rooms, a drop-in child care, and Salt Lake County Recreation staff offices.  The facility also includes 6 racquetball courts and generous casual activity areas.  The recreation center site is planned around a public plaza to be shared with the neighboring library.  A large outdoor multi-use field is planned in a subsequent phase.

The project is primarily funded by Salt Lake County ZAP taxes with supplemental funding from the Sorenson Group, Herriman City and Jordan School District.

Environmental Emphasis

The highlight of the Center is the incorporation of energy saving and environmentally friendly design components.  Salt Lake County has required the building to be designed to be a Gold Certified LEED Building.  This criteria includes the use of energy conserving HVAC  and electrical systems, day-lighting of most interior spaces and the use of renewable and locally available materials.
